Sea of Remnants: Overview

By John Michael · Updated

Sea of Remnants is a free ocean adventure RPG developed by Joker Studio and published by NetEase Games. Steam lists it for 2027. You are a puppetfolk sailor who wakes with no memory and sets out on a strange voyage with a mysterious girl to recover what was lost.

How it plays

The sea is the world. You sail waters that change, fight odd monsters, build up a fleet and gather companions for your ship. On land, the pirate city of Orbtopia develops according to the choices you make. The store page lists it as single player.

The good side

It is free to start. The art has a bold, handmade look that sets it apart from other sea games. English, Japanese and Simplified Chinese all have full voice audio. A city that changes with your decisions is a hook worth watching.

The watch-outs

The store page lists in-app purchases, and it does not say what is sold, so the true cost of playing is unknown. The PC requirements are heavy: the recommended setup asks for 32 GB of memory, an RTX 3070 Ti class card and 80 GB of storage, and a broadband connection is required. Controller support is partial. Only a year is given for release.

For players in Asia

Japanese and Simplified Chinese have full audio, and Korean and Traditional Chinese are supported in text. The store page names PC only and says nothing about regions or servers.

NEXTARCA's take

The look and the premise are easy to like. With a free game from a large publisher, the question is always what the shop sells and how much it gets in the way. We will hold our judgement until that is shown.
