Jagex has announced a fourth RuneScape MMO. The studio revealed the game at RuneFest 2026 in Birmingham on October 3 with a short teaser, and it is using the working title RS4. Several outlets are already calling it RuneScape 4, but Jagex has not settled on a final name.

You can watch the official trailer now. It is a first look at the art style, not gameplay.

What Jagex has confirmed

  • It is a full MMO, built in Unreal Engine.

  • It is set in the Sixth Age and begins in Ashenfall, the land first explored in RuneScape: Dragonwilds.

  • The story picks up years after the events of Dragonwilds and the fall of the Dragon Queen Kuldra.

  • The world is planned to grow beyond Ashenfall over time, into both familiar parts of Gielinor and new ones.

According to MMORPG.com, the project started life as an expansion for Dragonwilds planned for 2027. Players kept asking for MMO features such as persistent servers, larger player counts, social tools and trading hubs, and the idea grew into a game of its own.

It does not replace RuneScape or Old School

This is the detail existing players will care about most. Jagex says RS4 is “not a replacement for any of our games,” as quoted by VGChartz. It is meant to run next to RuneScape, Old School RuneScape and Dragonwilds as a separate game with its own team and its own updates.

What the teaser shows

The footage is brief. PC Gamer describes a medieval town in a green valley beneath floating islands, an adventurer on dragonback attacked by a three headed dragon, and a wizard welcoming a new arrival to the city. The look builds on the style of Dragonwilds.

What we still do not know

Almost everything about how it plays. Jagex says the game is still a few years away and that it has no answers yet on:

  • Platforms

  • Accounts and whether anything carries over from the other games

  • Membership and pricing

  • Combat and skills

  • The final name

There is no release window. Jagex has said it wants to shape the game with its community from an early stage, so more details should arrive as development moves on. Until then, the teaser and the Ashenfall setting are all there is to go on.

Would you start over in a brand new RuneScape, or are you staying with the one you already play?
