Onimusha: Way of the Sword surpassed one million units in worldwide sales on its first day, according to a September 7 announcement from Capcom. The launch also pushed cumulative sales of the full Onimusha series beyond ten million units.
It is a notable opening for a franchise returning with its first entirely new installment in more than two decades. The result provides an early indication of demand for Capcom’s revived swordplay action series, although the company has not disclosed which platforms or regions contributed most heavily to the total.
Onimusha reached one million sales across four platforms
Onimusha: Way of the Sword launched on September 4, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC. Capcom confirmed the one-million milestone three days later but specified that the figure had already been reached on launch day.
The publisher described the number as worldwide sales. Its announcement did not provide separate totals for each platform, country or distribution format. Capcom also did not disclose revenue, development costs or how the result compares with its internal sales expectations.
That distinction matters when evaluating the launch. The confirmed figure demonstrates a fast commercial start across the available platforms, but it cannot currently be used to identify the strongest version or market.
The series has returned after more than 20 years
Capcom describes Way of the Sword as the first new Onimusha title in over 20 years. Remasters and rereleases kept older entries accessible during that period, but the new game represents a larger attempt to move the series forward with a different protagonist, setting and modern combat presentation.
The story follows Miyamoto Musashi through a supernatural version of Edo-period Kyoto. Armed with the Oni Gauntlet, Musashi can defeat demonic Genma and absorb their souls while navigating a dark fantasy interpretation of the historic capital.
Capcom credited several pre-release initiatives with increasing awareness of the game, including playable demos and hands-on exhibitions. That explanation comes from the publisher and should be treated as Capcom’s assessment of the launch rather than an independently measured breakdown of what drove individual purchases.
With the new release included, the Onimusha franchise has now exceeded ten million cumulative units since the original game debuted in 2001. Capcom has not published an updated title-by-title breakdown showing how those sales are distributed across the series.
The result supports Capcom’s dormant-IP strategy
Capcom used the announcement to highlight its wider effort to reactivate intellectual properties that have not received new releases in recent years. From a business perspective, one million day-one sales gives the company an encouraging early result for that strategy.
The milestone may strengthen the internal case for continuing to invest in Onimusha and other dormant Capcom properties. It does not, however, confirm a sequel, expansion or long-term content roadmap. None of those projects were announced alongside the sales result.
The figure also should not be confused with an active-player count. Way of the Sword is a single-player game, and Capcom’s announcement reports unit sales rather than concurrent users or the number of people currently playing.
Onimusha: Way of the Sword is available now
Onimusha: Way of the Sword is available for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC. Official storefronts offer multiple editions, while availability and pricing can vary by region.

Capcom has not announced another sales target or a date for its next commercial update. Until the publisher releases a new milestone, the confirmed position is that Way of the Sword exceeded one million sales on launch day and helped the wider Onimusha series pass ten million units.
