ChillyRoom has released demo patch v0.6.45 for ReBlade: The Death Spiral, its cyberpunk action roguelike published by Spiral Up Games. The patch notes on Steam list fixes for enemies that did not spawn and for exits that did not take players to the next area, plus a few balance changes. It is the studio's second demo update in two days during Steam Next Fest.

What the patch changes

The notes are short, and every line is aimed at the demo:

  • Enemies not spawning: fixed.
  • Exits not working: fixed, so leaving an area now moves you on as it should.
  • Crossbow Soldiers: the number of shots they fire in a row has been changed. The notes do not give the new number.
  • Spike traps: removed from in front of some treasure chests.
  • Halberd Soldiers: taken out of the demo for now.

Why these fixes matter in a roguelike

The first two bugs are the serious ones. In a game built around runs, a room where enemies never appear, or an exit that does nothing, can leave you stuck with no way forward except quitting. That throws away the progress of the run you were on, which is the worst thing that can happen in this kind of game.

The other three changes read like a response to early player feedback. Spikes placed right in front of a chest punish players for doing what the game invites them to do, and crossbow volleys that last too long can feel unfair at range. Pulling Halberd Soldiers entirely, and saying it is temporary, suggests the studio wants to rework that enemy rather than tweak a number.

Where the demo stands

ReBlade casts you as a condemned Synthetic stuck in endless resets, in a world that draws on Chinese mythology, using weapons, chips and augments to fight mechanical creatures. The demo went up on Steam on October 20, and an earlier patch, v0.4.44, followed the same day. The game is listed for Windows PC on Steam.

Still not stated: a release date, which Steam lists as to be announced, whether Halberd Soldiers will return before the demo ends, and whether the demo stays available after Steam Next Fest. ChillyRoom asks players to send feedback and bug reports through the forms linked in its post.

NEXTARCA's take

Two patches in two days is a good sign. ChillyRoom is treating the demo as a live test, not a finished showcase, and it fixed the run breaking bugs first, which is the right order. If you bounced off the demo because a room never filled with enemies or a door would not open, it is worth another try now. Removing an enemy type outright is unusual in the middle of a festival, so we will be watching to see what a reworked Halberd Soldier looks like when it comes back.
