Digital Extremes has released Soulframe Preludes 16: Of Hook & Hound, expanding the game’s PC closed Alpha with fishing, wolfpup training, dynamic weather and a revised weapon customization system. The free update arrived on September 18 and gives current testers more reasons to explore Midrath beyond its main quests and combat encounters.
The update is broader than its fishing theme suggests. It also adds matchmaking through Revival Shrines, new weapons and armour, Legendary Weapon Epithets, combat adjustments and a long list of fixes. Its headline systems are designed to make the world react more meaningfully to how players travel, gather resources and care for a companion.
Soulframe Preludes 16 connects fishing, weather and companion care
Fishing begins through a short Votive called Minnow’s Hook, which leads players to Doyen’s Spool and their first lure. From there, Envoys can fish in swamps, lakes and along shorelines across Midrath.
The system includes six lures and six fish species. A fish’s habitat, preferred lure, time of day, weather conditions and level of Ode corruption can affect where and how it appears. Players also gain Angling experience across ten levels, improving their ability to identify and catch rarer fish.
Catching a fish creates a practical choice. Releasing a cleansed fish can provide Harmony and ingredients used for Virtue Elixirs. Bringing it back to the Nightfold instead provides resources that can be prepared as food for a wolfpup. That connection gives fishing a role in progression rather than leaving it as a separate leisure activity.
Wolfpup training begins, but riding comes later
Players who complete The Shewolf Snared and choose a wolfpup can now summon that companion while exploring. Activities including combat, running, dungeon exploration, treasure hunting, fetch, fishing and pet interactions contribute to its development.
Each pup grows through five attributes: Guts, Speed, Endurance, Curiosity and Heart. Those attributes influence both the pup’s behavior and the passive aura it provides. Guts can improve Stability, for example, while Curiosity can help locate rarer items. The current system limits the number of development points a pup can earn, so players cannot maximize every attribute.
Digital Extremes has confirmed that the companion system will continue to expand. A future update is intended to let a fully grown Omen Wolf serve as a mount, but that feature is not included in Preludes 16. No date for the riding update has been announced.
Weather now affects more than the view
The new Weatherways system brings shifting rain, fog, wind, overcast skies and lightning to Midrath while retaining clear periods within the existing day and night cycle. Some conditions change play directly. Lightning storms strengthen Voltaic damage sources, rain increases the availability of organic resources, and fog makes it harder for enemies to detect the player.
Weather is also tied to fishing because certain species favor particular conditions. This gives players a reason to pay attention to the sky when searching for a specific catch or resource instead of treating weather as a purely visual effect.
Weapon customization gains more player control
Preludes 16 introduces Striking, a new stage of the Tempers system. Dismantling weapons now teaches the blacksmith Tuvalkane the Tempers they contain. Once a Temper has been learned, eligible level 30 weapons can have modifiers replaced, amplified or added to an empty slot, provided the required conditions and resources are met.
The update also adds three weapons named Grimana, Wreath and Gystalt, plus the Suit of The Sleeve armour set. Legendary weapons can now receive unlockable Epithets, allowing players to assign earned names based on combat, crafting, exploration and other accomplishments.
Combat changes include faster parry response, reduced attack magnetization, stronger sprint and Spectral Strikes, and increased Stagger from several attack types. Revival Shrines can now search for three additional Envoys attempting the same activity, giving players a more direct route into a full party.
Soulframe access remains limited on PC
Soulframe Preludes remains an early PC test rather than the game’s wider launch. Players can join the access queue through the official Soulframe website, with new invitations sent each week. Founder access is also available through paid packs.
The Steam page still lists Soulframe as coming soon, and Digital Extremes has not announced a wider PC release date in this update. For now, Preludes 16 is available to current testers, while prospective players can register for access and review the complete official patch notes before joining Midrath.
