Final Fantasy VII Revelation director Naoki Hamaguchi says he has completed the game 46 times during development. His runs focused on testing different parts of the adventure. He also expects the final entry in the remake trilogy to contain at least as much content as Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, and potentially more.
Those 46 runs were part of Hamaguchi’s work as director. They do not mean players must finish the story dozens of times to see its ending.
What Hamaguchi checked across 46 runs
In an interview with GameSpot, Hamaguchi said checking every asset and element from the start of a run to its end could take more than 100 hours. He cannot make that exhaustive check every time. On some runs, he skips combat to inspect the main story; on others, he concentrates on different elements.
That is a description of development testing, not a confirmed completion time for players. Square Enix has not published a standard main story length.
How Revelation compares with Rebirth
Hamaguchi told GamesRadar+ that he expects Revelation to have at least as much content as Rebirth and possibly more. He acknowledged that some players felt overwhelmed by Rebirth’s activities. For Revelation, the team wants to make it clearer what players can expect from each activity.
Hamaguchi has also described a larger open world, with the Highwind adding travel through the skies. Square Enix says players will be able to choose which party members take on certain quests, affecting how some events unfold. That could give players reasons to revisit parts of the game, though the extent of those differences is still unclear.
The 46 playthroughs show how often Hamaguchi has checked Revelation during development. They do not establish how long a typical player will spend with it.
Square Enix has scheduled Final Fantasy VII Revelation for April 8, 2027, on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. A reliable player completion time has yet to be established.
