Stranger Than Heaven Shows Three of Its Five Eras Before January Launch

RGG Studio is walking players through Stranger Than Heaven one era at a time. In the space of a week it has published in depth looks at three of the game’s five settings, the latest being Minami in 1943, shared on its Steam page on October 3.

The three eras shown so far

• 1915, Kokura: where the story of protagonist Makoto Daito begins. Its look was published on September 29.

• 1929, Kure: the next stage of Daito’s journey. The studio describes a city of waterways, hillsides and winding backstreets that is starting to reflect a more modernized Japan.

• 1943, Minami: a city of energy, glamour and showbiz as new cultural influences flow in. RGG Studio also points to an uneasy mood in the city and to society’s darker undercurrents.

Why the eras matter

The game follows Daito across fifty years and five cities of modern Japan. He survives by fighting and makes his name as a showman, so each city is both a place to brawl and a stage. Seeing the settings side by side is the clearest picture yet of how much the world changes around him as the decades pass.

The Minami look fits that second half especially well, since the studio’s Tokyo Game Show broadcast also took a closer look at the showbiz mechanics.

What is left to see

Two of the five eras have not had their own look yet. RGG Studio has not said when those will arrive.
