Not sure what to play this weekend? These four free RPG demos let you try before you buy.

Update, October 2: Sagas of Lumin has moved to the end of this list as one to watch. Its playtest is full and no longer accepts applications.
Deciding what to play next is easier when you can try it first. This weekend, four RPGs on the NEXTARCA radar have free demos you can play right now, ranging from quick taster sessions to demos long enough to fill your whole weekend. Several of them even let you keep your progress when you buy the full game.
Here is what each demo offers, how long it lasts and where you can play it.

1. FINAL FANTASY RESONANCE
Best for: fans of classic turn-based Final Fantasy
Platforms: PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch and PC
Progress carries over: yes
Game details: FINAL FANTASY RESONANCE
The biggest demo of the weekend covers the opening and the whole first chapter, which works out to roughly three to five hours. It is a strong sample of the HD-2D visuals and the weakness and stagger based combat, where breaking an enemy's defenses opens the door to powerful Resonance attacks. Because your save transfers to the full game on October 22, anything you finish now is time you will not have to replay.

2. Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter
Best for: story focused RPG players with a free weekend
Platforms: PS5, Nintendo Switch and PC
Progress carries over: yes
Game details: Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter
Falcom's demo is unusually generous. It includes the prologue and the first chapter with no time limit, and players report around ten hours of content. Story progress, levels and items all move into the full game, which is already out. On PS5 and Steam you simply load the demo save from the title screen, while the Switch version uses the Transfer option instead.

3. DYNASTY WARRIORS 3: Complete Edition Remastered
Best for: anyone curious about musou action
Platforms: PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC
Progress carries over: no
Game details: DYNASTY WARRIORS 3: Complete Edition Remastered
The remaster launched on October 1, and its free demo is still the quickest way to decide if it is for you. You get the Battle of Hulao Gate on the Allied Forces side, with six officers to choose from: Zhao Yun, Guan Yu, Xiahou Dun, Zhen Ji, Zhou Yu and Sun Shangxiang. It ends with a tough elite fight. Demo saves do not transfer, so treat it as a pure test drive of the new combat.

4. UNDEFEATED: Genesis
Best for: superhero power fantasy fans
Platforms: PC (Steam)
Progress carries over: not stated
Game details: UNDEFEATED: Genesis
Here you play Al, an ordinary man pulled to the alien planet Voltissia, where he gains extraordinary powers. The demo is all about moving like a superhero: flying freely across the map and taking down mutants with your new abilities. The full game comes to PC and PS5 in 2027, but for now the demo is Steam only.

One to watch: Sagas of Lumin
Status: playtest full, applications closed
Platforms: PC (Steam)
Game details: Sagas of Lumin
This single-player action RPG is built around riding a dragon into battle, and its Steam playtest dropped players into a mission from later in the game, with aerial dogfights against other dragons and fire attacks on enemy camps. You can no longer get in, though. The developer said on its official Discord server on September 28 that the playtest quota was filled by the second day and applications are closed. The full game is planned for February 5, 2027, so for now the best move is to add it to your Steam wishlist.
Which demo should you play first?
Only have an evening? Try the DYNASTY WARRIORS 3 demo.
Want to make progress that counts? Start FINAL FANTASY RESONANCE or Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter, since both keep your save.
Looking for something new? UNDEFEATED: Genesis is a fresh idea from a smaller team, and its demo is free on Steam.
Found a favorite? Every game on this list has its own page on NEXTARCA with release dates, platforms and system requirements, so you can check the details before your next purchase.
